T O P I C R E V I E WastronutFriends,I recently purchased a B&W photo of the X-1 in flight signed by eight of it's pilots. I would like to find out just how many pilots total flew this famous rocket plane, the X-1 (NOT the X-1A).Thanks a bunch,WaynoBob MWayne, Congrats on obtaining such a nice item -Referring to the excellent book by JayMiller, "The X-Planes/X-1 to X-31," I havecounted a total of 18 different pilots whoflew the X-1. Five of these plts just flewone flight & seven flew at least 10 flights. The X-1 pilots listed in Miller's book follow: Albert Boyd Joe Cannon Robt. Champine (13 flts) S. Crossfield (10) Frank Everest (10) James Fitzgerald Patrick Fleming "Slick" Goodlin (26) John Griffith Herbert Hoover (14) Dick Johnson Alvin Johnston Howard Lilly Gus Lundquist Jack Ridley Joe Walker Jack Woolams (10) Chuck Yeager (34) (Some pretty famous names there!)Completing a collection of autographs of all18 these plts, some deceased many years ago, would probably not be possible, but autographs of, say, 10-12 would really bea worthwhile challenge.
